The newly opened Sydney Metro Waterloo Station, designed by John McAslan & Partners, is a vibrant celebration of Waterloo’s layered history. More than a transport hub, Waterloo Station blends art, culture, and architecture to create a sense of belonging. Here, public space becomes a canvas for storytelling, guiding movement, deepening connection, and enriching the everyday journey for all who pass through.
Director of John McAslan and Partners (JMP) Troy Uleman explained, “Waterloo is a dynamic, multicultural community with a rich Indigenous, social and industrial history. Through consultation with Indigenous advisors, Yerrabingin, we learnt the phrase ‘the past is in the earth and the future is in the sky.’
That became the conceptual framework for our design, which takes passengers on a journey shaped by Waterloo’s layered heritage.”
At the heart of the station’s concourse, travellers are met by a commanding 9.7-metre portrait of local Indigenous dancer Roscoe, a work by Indigenous Australian artist Nicole Monks that celebrates a living and thriving culture. Agora floodlights deliver a uniform wash across the piece, with luminaires offering exceptional visual comfort, energy efficiency, and superior colour rendering.
