Sydney international airport terminal-1

In 2019, Zaha Hadid Architects and Cox Architecture won the design competition for the new terminal, with 360 Degrees Landscape Architects shaping the precinct’s landscape. Multiplex was awarded the contract to deliver the project, with Woods Bagot leading design and delivery within the construction team.

Consultation with Dharug Custodians, supported by First Nations consultant Murrawin, informed the integration of local narratives and cultural identity into the architecture.

The design prioritises sustainability through natural ventilation, water recycling and energy-efficient systems, while drawing inspiration from the Cumberland Plain in its horizontal form and undulating interior ceiling. Inside, open sightlines, warm materiality and seamless indoor–outdoor connections create a people-centred and environmentally responsive terminal.

At the exterior entrance, iGuzzini Woody pole-top luminaires illuminate the seating areas and walkways within the landscaped forecourt, enhancing comfort, safety and wayfinding.
